Ingrid Menzel for KulturPhon
Ingrid Menzel [IM] I'd like to talk a little about your last project. During our conversation moon will eclipse the sun. Is it the kind of state that your exhibition is about?
Robert Sochacki [RS] I think we are very lucky that we can be aware of our reality, but I'm affraid we just went too far in consuming it.
[IM] Do you mean we all lack awareness and just don't pay attention?
[RS] Well, actually we don't pay attention to ourselves, so surely no to eclipse, especially if it's on Monday instead of Saturday or Sunday. Most people just won't be aware of it.
[IM] So how is the XXI century man like?
[RS] I don't know how is he like, but surely he's bound with lots of patterns and dependence that he casts on himself. I don't have the ready-made answer and I don’t propose any instant solution for that - my installations aren't exits, like "going out from reality", they are rather entrances, consciously entering the reality.
[IM] On posters and postcards you've written "...makes one's mind tolerate hum, random signals start to form unique, rythmical patterns, the brain treats it as own creation."
[RS] Yes, this is some kind of definition of how we look at noise, what kind of tool is it for us, a tool that we give to our mind. When we stop hearing and seeing and start listening and watching, we will get to our inner space, to ourselves, we no longer take part in out passive... being, we calm our intellect and rise emotions. It's all about actively taking part in our reality.
[IM] Your exhibition is a lot of bare electronics, is that esthetic model you propose?
[RS] I think that leaving behind all the techno-pop culture reference, makes non-material perceiving easier, is creates emotional space of some kind.
[IM] Aren't you afraid that trough such esthetic and way you look at man people will refer your work to Gary Hill or Nam June Paik?
[RS] Thank you for such reference! During our performance in Sfinks someone at the audience said "...it's like Zbigniew Karkowski in...". I find it wonderful to be conscious of once emitted energy. In my realizations I follow the rule of recycling, I say Let us chew yourself up just like we let ourselves be chown up by you.
[IM] You say "Us"...
[RS] That's right, because I'm doing some kind of emotional exchange with Aleph for some time, that's how does our cooperation work like. We are like two emotional beings shifted in phase - when we meet we exchange something we have in fact already created. We commonly call what each one produces by himself.
[IM] Aleph is much younger than you, how do you find this cooperation?
[RS] I think it's like language - it doesn't matter how well educated you are, but how much emotion can you express with it. We understand and complement each other, and the effects you can see during the performance.
[IM] Do you think people living in a hurry coming to your exhibition will be able to take their part in this performance? It lasts about 45 minutes, and its intensity is often different than we got used to...
[RS] Sounds and images that we present aren't anything predefined, and long waiting sets our imagination up. Either we are able to leave our mind-schemes, to get between decor and reality and look beyond ourselves, or we allow our everyday-reality to control us. I think it's not about relax or short psychophysical regeneration but rather about the state of our consciousness. We ask about the road and open the doors, but it's up to spectators whether they get in or only give a look.
[IM] So we're back to "not to watch but see, not to listen but hear"?
[RS] Right. During Stany/Conditions exhibition we do ask the question - Are you sure that you see, are you sure that you hear?
